In school, our teachers asked us to work together. They are both right. In our world today, words like cooperation, teamwork, etc. have brought us to a new level of sharing and working together - to COLLABORATE. The world of Open Source is all about sharing and collaborating. We grow when we share. We can do more when we collaborate. The decades directly after the big wars were based on protection not sharing. Especially the manufacturing companies were protecting their trade marks and or patents with fanatic efforts. Still you see this. But more and more the idea gets more and more attention and support that research and development should be more open -- especially with the NEW TOOL 'INTERNET'. A good example for the open source idea is the free availabe linux-software: like Ubuntu; Fedora; Suse and much more. And fortunately a lot of more software: PHP; HTML; MYSQL; Postgresql; FTP Open Office Gimp a whole list of generally unknown software. Imagine how many people contribute though internet to develop these software which now used DAILY. But let us do some exploration in other areas: Like fashion; cars on fuel cells; food. New vision: Open Source. Time will prove it will survive but to my perspective it is in fact the most democratic way of research and development. By everyone; for everyone. Not a few "isolated" academics in a labority. No...the people in their homes -- among them of course a great deal of academics / higher educated people. It is a new concept. And........last and not least people can discover for themselves their talents. So I can't really put this under Creative Commons, sorry. But I hope it's okay under fair use. Enjoy. P.S. for the map geeks, it's still internally WGS84 longitude-latitude, and I used the SVG transform matrix to stretch it to about A4 landscape size. Postgis, some perl-hackery and Inkscape used. There *should* be a fair use exception here, and in other countries around the world, but our governments pay more attention to the big-pocketted movie and music industry lobbyists than they do to the needs of their citizens... In countries without a fair use exception, there is a grey area of "tolerated use" which is where copyright owners could complain but generally choose not to... your map might fall into this area. -- Jeremy Malcolm PhD LLB (Hons) B Com Internet and Open Source lawyer, consumer advocate, geek host -t NAPTR 1.0.8.0.3.1.2.9.8.1.6.e164.org|awk -F! Professors themselves have only a limited amount of time to learn about open source, and are often unsure about how, exactly, to get started. POSSE (Professors' Open Source Summer Experience) is designed for these professors. Sponsored by Red Hat, the POSSE program is a weeklong bootcamp that will immerse professors in open source projects. Participants spend a week of intensive participation in selected open source projects, led by professors with experience in teaching open source development, in partnership with community members who have deep experience and insight. By the end of the session, participants should have a much better understanding of the workings of open source projects, and a strong network of contacts to lean on as they begin to bring students into the open source world. === Get involved === If you like the idea of more professors teaching open source, we need your help! Check the list below if there's something you're interested in helping with; if you have ideas for something not on this list or are interested in helping out but don't know where to start, drop into the #teachingopensource-posse IRC channel on Freenode or email posse at teachingopensource.org and we'll find a way for you to get involved. We're looking for ideas, feedback, and input, and every question you ask helps us make the next POSSE even better, so please ask! === Organize your own POSSE === If you are interested in organizing or helping with a POSSE at your location during the summer of 2010, or are curious about what might be involved in such an undertaking, join the mailing list and send an email to the list with the subject "I'd like to plan a POSSE." In that email, introduce yourself and let us know when and where you're thinking of running your POSSE and what questions you have, and we'll be glad to talk with you about the process. === Contact === For more information about POSSE, email us at posse at teachingopensource.org. In the meantime, these resources may be helpful. Wiki: POSSE is using the TeachingOpenSource wiki space. Please feel free to edit any of these pages. If you're creating new pages, please prefix the page title with "POSSE". IRC: The channel on Freenode will be used for POSSE-specific IRC communication. Participants are encouraged to join the larger TeachingOpenSource community in the #teachingopensource as well. Mailing list: The Teaching Open Source mailing list is a good place for POSSE-related discussion. -- Mohd Izhar Firdaus Bin Ismail Amano Hikaru ??? ???? ???? We're still looking for help. We're especially interested in C coders. So if you're a C coder and interested in getting involved, please contact me off list. We're well funded and the work is paid. We're both interested in part time and full time coders, so if you have some spare time, let me know!
